Do you know 5 Key Points of Extrusion Die Repair & Maintenance to Extend Die Lifetime

2022.04

The average lifetime of an extrusion die is around ten years. To avoid die wear from affecting product quality and to extend its lifetime, remember the ISSRT rules to keep your die performing like new.

ISSRT stands for Inspection, Save, Solution, Return, and Trust — five principles for responsible die maintenance.

1. Inspection: A complete inspection is the best way to extend extrusion die lifetime.

The lifetime of an extrusion die — whether long or short — depends on operating conditions, usage hours, and the type of polymer processed. Routine maintenance is essential for extrusion dies; in addition, sending the die back to the original supplier regularly for a complete inspection can extend its lifetime by 10–20%.

How do we perform a complete inspection?

First, we inspect the surface of the die channel and landing area, checking the condition of the chrome plating and whether there is any surface damage. Second, we use an industrial endoscope to inspect the extrusion die lip. Unlike visual checks that only reveal surface-level issues, our industrial endoscope inspection can detect hidden defects at the die lip that would otherwise go unnoticed — defects that silently affect your product quality over time. We also inspect other parts of the die, such as the deckling system, adjusting bolts, heaters, and more.

2. Save: Save time — don’t save money at the cost of product quality.

We provide repair services for all brands of extrusion dies. After a complete inspection, we propose a repair plan for the customer’s reference, including budget, repair timeline, and recommended repair methods. Sometimes, the budget or repair time may far exceed the customer’s expectations. The main reason is that customers typically do not have the instruments needed to inspect the die themselves, and therefore have no way of knowing how serious the damage to their extrusion die actually is.

Faced with an unexpected repair quote, what would you do?

Some customers take the die back and continue using it until it breaks down entirely. Most customers arrange a budget to purchase a spare extrusion die in advance — so even if the repair takes longer than expected, production will not be affected. Another approach is to increase the repair budget; more customers tend to fix the problem immediately rather than bear greater losses down the line.

Time is an invisible cost of production — fix the problem to save time, not just repair cost.

3. Solution: It is easy to find the problem, but not everyone can solve it.

There are many extrusion die manufacturers in the world, but not every manufacturer has the ability to repair dies. Repairing an extrusion die may look straightforward, but there are actually three indispensable requirements.

We meet all three requirements: a thorough understanding of die structure and design, a full range of processing machines and chrome plating facilities, and the skill to maintain consistent quality. This is why we are able to offer repair services for all brands — whether it is channel surface damage or chrome re-plating, all processing is completed in-house.

4. Return: A short-term investment for longer, stable returns.

Repair time is another concern for customers, as a longer repair period means greater losses from production downtime. Repair time depends on the extent of damage to the extrusion die, ranging from as little as 3 days to as long as one month, with channel surface damage typically requiring the longest processing time.

To help customers save time, we introduced an advanced processing technique for inner surface damage repair, specifically designed for small, minor scratches (within 5×3 mm²). This has shortened repair time from 3 weeks to just 1 week — with no compromise on quality. Applying advanced techniques to shorten repair time reduces short-term losses and helps customers get back to stable production sooner — a benefit for both sides.

5. Trust: A trustworthy supplier delivers the greatest added value.

When purchasing a new phone, computer, or car, what matters most after the sale? Based on statistical data, most people consider professional, convenient, and reliable after-sales service to be essential. Customers may not always return to the original supplier, but they will always choose a trustworthy one who can provide them with reassurance and support.

For our customers, the greatest added value of purchasing an extrusion die from us is our comprehensive technology support and service.
